Does Macy’s Offer Price Protection? Here’s What You GOTTA Know

Surprisingly, I’ve written very few articles about Macy’s over the years. As one of the long standing department stores in the country, they were founded WAY back in 1858, this needs to change. So it’s with this in mind that I wanted to talk about the price protection policy at Macy’s and some insider tips that’ll help you save some money. Here’s everything you need to know to get a Macy’s price adjustment and some hard earned money back in your wallet.

Does Macy's Offer Price Protection? Here's What You GOTTA Know

So…Does Macy’s Offer Price Protection?

Yes.

Macy’s gives you 10 days from the date of purchase to get price protection, also known as a “Price Adjustment”, if they lower the price of something you previously bought.

You can get a price adjustment on BOTH online and in-store purchases.

Be aware that Macys.com and Macy’s brick and mortar locations often have different prices on the same exact items which presents great opportunities to get a price adjustment (more on this later).

Do They Also Price Match Competitor Pricing?

No.

Back in 2022, Macy’s stopped matching the lower price of competitors.

Since Macy’s carries mainly their own in-house brands this wasn’t too big of a deal.

How Do I Get Macy’s Price Protection?

In-Store: Simply bring the item and receipt back into the Macy’s store of purchase and they’ll verify the lower price and refund you back to your original form of payment. You should be able to get this done at any checkout register in the store.

Online: Macy’s asks that you start a Live Chat session with them by clicking on the Chat Online link located at the bottom of this page. and tell them you’d like to get a price adjustment and they’ll gladly help you out.

Are There Any Product Exclusions?

Yes.

The exclusions list is very small and only includes items sold on the Macy’s Digital Marketplace or come directly from Vendor partners.

Can I Buy Online and Get an In-Store Price Adjustment?

Yes.

This is actually a really cool shopping hack at Macy’s that was brought to my attention by a loyal reader.

Here’s the FULL scenario:

She was shopping at her local Macy’s and well, why don’t I just let her explain it in her own words…

“Wanted to let you know of a great deal I scored at Macy’s this week. I got a pair of Silver brand jeans, regular retail price of $85, for $4.99! They were special priced as they were the last pair in the store (on a mannequin), and not my size. I had a very helpful sales clerk inform me that I could order them online in my size for around $76, then come into the store and get them returned (and exchanged) for the in-store special price. They were $16.99 in-store, by the time I got them ordered and back in to return, the in-store price went down to $4.99! They even credited my shopping costs! Crazy!! Best deal I’ve ever gotten!”

Awesome. So let’s break this down a bit so you can give it a try.

Here are some IMPORTANT details to look for:

1. Look for Clearance Items

  • By only looking at the clearance rack you’re much more likely to find items that will fit the “buy online and return to store” criteria.
  • Look for items that are darn near out of stock which they don’t have in your size. This should not be that difficult.

TIP: The only way this works is if the store’s website is selling the item for more than the in-store price. This actually happens all the time as brick & mortar stores are constantly slashing prices in an effort to clear out inventory to make room for new styles.

2. How To Return and Re-Buy

  • Once you find an item you want that is a screaming deal, just order from the website, return in-store, and get a price adjustment to the lower price.
  • If the store you are shopping at has a smartphone app, and most big department stores do, make sure you download it and have it available when shopping in-store. You’ll be able to quickly see what the stores website is selling the item for and find some great “deal opportunities”.

Here is a list of popular store apps where this would work, including Macy’s, to help facilitate this clever shopping hack:

– Macy’s (Android, iOS)

– American Eagle Outfitters (Android, iOS)

– Nordstrom (iOS)

– Kohl’s (Android, iOS)

– JCPenney (Android, iOS)

– Old Navy (Android, iOS)

3. Being Friendly Goes a LONG Way

Because this hack requires you knowing if the store will let you return items in-store that were bought from their website, start up a friendly conversation with an employee and ask if this is an option.

By being upfront with what you’re trying to accomplish it will take the stigma out of it. After-all, it is nothing more than smart shopping.

While this hack is not something you can take advantage of during every shopping trip, it certainly is something to be aware of, especially at Macy’s where in-store and online pricing can very wildly.

What Happens If I Originally Paid Cash?

You’ll get money back in your original form of payment, so you can expect to get cash back on a cash purchase at Macy’s.

What If I Used a Coupon on the Original Purchase?

This gets a little tricky.

You CANNOT use a previously applied Macy’s coupon code when getting a price adjustment.

So be sure to do the math and figure out if the price adjustment is actually a better price when removing the coupon code from the equation.

Can I Use a 3rd Party to Get Price Protection?

No.

Citing privacy issues, Macy’s does NOT allow you to use a service like EARNY and Capital One Shopping that automatically asks for price protection on your behalf.

So the bottom-line is that Macy’s will ONLY take price protection requests directly from the customer.

When you’re about to buy something, chances are you compare prices between various stores to get the best deal. Comparing prices and price matching can be a great way to get the exact same product for less money. Fortunately, Kohl’s offers price matching to help their customers get the products they want, for less. However, with any policy, the Kohl’s price match policy comes with some large restrictions, rules, and exclusions. Here’s everything you need to know.

Kohl's Price Match Policy: How to Make It Work For You So You Can Save

What’s the Kohl’s Price Match Policy?

The Kohl’s price match policy states that they’ll match a competitor’s in-store price, some online prices depending on the store, and will DEFINETLEY match Kohls.com pricing.

The item MUST be identical in all cases.

There are some rules to keep in mind when it comes to taking advantage of their price match policy.

Read on to learn more about any exclusions and policy rules.

How Many Days Do You Have to Get a Price Match?

14 days.

Kohl’s offers customers a price adjustment for up 2 weeks.

So if it’s a significant purchase, be sure to keep that receipt and check competing stores for a lower price.

Also, be sure to periodically check to see if Kohl’s dropped the price of the item and go get a price adjustment.

What Competitors Will They Price Match?

Any local competitor.

If you find a lower price from a store in your area, bring in the competitor’s ad for proof of the price and get a price match.

Keep in mind that Kohl’s has a long list of products and brands they will NOT price match.

Click here to check out all the brand exclusions that the Kohl’s price match policy does NOT accept.

Some of the more popular brands on the exclusions list include Calvin Klein, Nike, Adidas, Levi’s, and Vans.

Will They Price Match Online Stores?

Yes…some.

I specifically asked a Kohl’s representative which online retailers they’ll price match and they gave me this list:

– Bed Bath & Beyond

– Boscov’s

 – JCPenney

– Meijer

– Saks

– Belk

– Carter’s

– Menards

– Sears

– Best Buy

– Dillard’s

– Lowe’s

– Neiman Marcus

– Target

– Bloomingdale’s

– Home Depot

– Macy’s

– Nordstrom

– Walmart

When you’re ready to get an online price match just start a live chat session with Kohl’s and they’ll help you out.

Be sure to have your order number as well as the website where you found the lower price.

What About Amazon?

Kohl’s will NOT price match products from Amazon or any other “online only” store.

But if you’re curious, these stores all WILL happily price match Amazon.

It’s also worth noting that Kohl’s will not accept a price match from warehouse clubs like Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s.

Can You Get a Price Match on the Kohl’s Website?

Yes.

You absolutely can get a price match on the Kohl’s website.

Sometimes a product’s price in-store may differ slightly from the online advertised price on Kohls.com.

This is often based on the location of the store.

Any Product Exclusions?

Yes.

There are quite a few product exclusions to be aware of.

Some of the bigger product exclusions include:

– Mattresses

– Toys

– Select Novelty Gifts

– Sporting Goods

– Premium Electronics

Be sure to check out Kohl’s price match exclusions page to understand all the do’s and don’ts that are allowed.

Do I Need My Receipt to Make it Happen?

Yes.

You must have your original receipt with you if you are looking to get a price adjustment.

This is to provide both proof of purchase and to see exactly when you bought the product as you only have 14 days to get a price adjustment.

Where Do I Go In the Store To Get a Price Match?

Kohl’s price match policy is rather vague on exactly where you go inside your local Kohl’s store to get a price match.

Ask an employee when you walk in and they’ll be able to direct you.

Likely for competitor price matching, it will be at the regular checkout section, while price adjustments are likely done in the returns section.

When it comes to doing the price match in-store, be sure to have a printed copy of the competitor’s local ad showing the identical product you wish to match.

The ad should have the product’s price and a description of the product to ensure it is identical to the Kohl’s product you are looking to match.

Ask the Reader: Have you ever asked for a price adjustment at Kohl’s? Was it an easy process or more hassle than it’s worth?

I’m a huge fan of taking advantage of price match policies when retailers allows it. And guess what? Nordstrom absolutely allows it and it’s a big part of their tradition of great customer service. So I figured it was time to take a deep dive into the Nordstrom price match policy and figure out exactly how it works. I hope this helps you get some money back.

Nordstrom Price Match Policy: Everything You Need to Know

Does Nordstrom Offer a Price Match?

Yes, but it’s a bit muddy, especially when trying to figure out which stores they’ll actually price match.

This is why I wanted to write this article and set the record straight.

What Stores Does Nordstrom Price Match?

Surprisingly, I couldn’t find an answer to this question ANYWHERE so I hit up Nordstrom live chat and asked.

Turns out Nordstrom ONLY price matches the following 10 retailers:

1- Amazon (must be sold & shipped by Amazon)

2- Bloomingdale’s

3- East Dane

4- Macy’s

5- Mr. Porter

6- Neiman Marcus

7- Net-A-Porter

8- ShopBop

9- Saks Fifth Avenue

10- Zappos

How Many Days Do You Have to Get a Price Adjustment?

14 days.

If you find a lower price for up to 14 days after your purchase you can request a price match.

This can be done either in-store or via their web portal HERE.

Do I Need My Receipt to Make it Happen?

For in-store purchases you need to request the price match at time of purchase or by bringing in your receipt at a later date.

So…yes, you NEED your receipt as proof of purchase.

What Are the Specifics of their Policy?

In order to get a Nordstrom price match you need to meet the following 4 criteria.

  1. Item must be identical.
  2. Must be in-stock at select competitor.
  3. Bring in the current ad of the competitor, or a clickable link to the product on your smartphone as evidence of the lower price.
  4. Only 1 price match per item.

Are There Any Exceptions to Their Policy?

Yes, quite a few actually…

– Order-level discounts – Not sure what this means, does anyone know? Leave a comment below and fill me in.

– Designer Brands purchased at a discount – If you already bought it “on sale” you can’t get a price match on top of that.

– Gift card promotions – If Nordstrom is having a deal on gift cards and selling them for less than face value you can’t get a price match if you bought a gift card before the deal started.

– Shipping offers – This one is kind of obvious.

– Items from the outlet – This includes stuff bought from Nordstrom Rack.

– Flash sales – Can’t get a price match if you originally bought the item during a Flash Sale.

– Auction & Club Retailers – They won’t price match places like Costco, Sam’s Club or eBay.com.

– Regional and non-U.S.-based retailers.

Can I Get a Price Adjustment on Stuff That Goes on Sale?

No.

Nordstrom is famous for offering anniversary sales, limited-time savings, and “extra savings” events.

Unfortunately you CAN’T get a price-match on stuff bought before “the specific discount time period”.

Can I Get an Online Price Match?

Yes.

Unlike many online retailers, Nordstrom allows you to get an online price match when you shop their website.

As mentioned earlier, they have a webpage set up to start the process.

You just enter your order number and zip code and they’ll look up your purchase and help you get the price match.

Anything Else I Need to Know?

Yes!

Here are a couple more juicy tidbits that might be useful.

  1. According to some Nordstrom shoppers, they’ll price match J.Crew as well.
  2. I’ve also heard that you can use Nordstrom Live Chat to get a price match which in many cases will save you a trip to the store.

Let me know if you have more insider tips that I can share.

Ask the Reader: What’s been your experience with the price match policy at Nordstrom? Let me know in the comments, thanks!
